The below article about the previous grandmaster Takamatsu Toshitsugu is a translation from the Japanese martial arts magazine Hiden (Japanese site) which has had many articles about Hatsumi Masaaki. The article is probably more than ten years old, but may still serve as an introduction of Takamatsu Toshitsugu.

Hombu

Tonights training with Soke was, of course, nothing less than amazing.
I was very fortunate to train with Larry, who has been living in Japan for about 17 years and his Japanese language skills are superb. He was able to translate to me some of the subtle points that were lost in the translation for the rest of the dojo.

You must study how to control the opponent by moving your whole body as one entity using the right distance and timing. Proper footwork is crucial here. When taking a step use your hips and let the upper body work freely feeling out the opponent and following his movements at all times. The same applies when holding a weapon. Move as if not holding the weapon and concentrate on the footwork. When holding a longer weapon make use of the centrifugal force and let the weapon work of its own accord. Don’t think! Move from your heart and keep a playful attitude like a small kid playing fearlessly with a demon.

Take action at the right moment. Start out with your footwork and let things develop naturally from there. Let your first steps be preparatory and create a balanced foundation from which you can take the right action. When you are in balance you can make good judgements and go in the right direction with every next step. In this way you will find always better ways and be able to change with the circumstances. Keep going! And don’t think! It is said that enlightenment is just one step ahead.

You have to become zero! Don’t let the opponent feel what you are doing. Don’t think! If you don’t know what you are doing yourself, the opponent can’t read your moves or your intention. The opponent must be left floating in the air. Feel them out and find their weak points. It’s not about being strong or weak, good or bad. It’s not a sport. It’s about surviving. That’s why it’s dangerous to think like a martial artist. You will be too easy to predict. Move naturally and use your whole body. Control everything, make use of your surroundings, and keep going whatever happens. The techniques are not important. Learn the feeling and everything else will fall into place. You can’t take the techniques. They are given to you, if you become zero!
